What is a Community Friend?

The Individual with Disabilities Act (IDEA) gives families of children with disabilities many educational rights. It is important that families know about these educational rights so they can participate in developing their child's educational program. Community Friends help families get the information they need.

Community Friends are Native American advocates who have received training from our agency about IDEA and other special education laws and regulations. Community Friends receive packets of information every other month that they give to families in their communities. They also learn how to get families other information about special education and disabilities. Our staff stays in close contact with each Community Friend to build a strong network of support for all families.

Community Friends help parents in their own communities by:

  • giving information to families about special education.
  • contacting the state Parent Training and Information Centers to bring training's to their community.
  • attending school meetings with parents as a support person.

There are so many families who need information on special education law. There are so many children who need more help in school. Please contact us if you would like to help families and children by being a Community Friend.
